How Vanessa Turned a Creative Opportunity into a Career

By Heritage | Denver, Success Stories | 0 comment | 10 August, 2026 | 0

A stage set for a local church. A handful of colored pencils and a sheet of graph paper. That is where Vanessa Morrison’s design story begins, and it is proof that sometimes the biggest leaps start with the smallest tools.

Meet Vanessa

Vanessa was born in Boston and raised on Cape Cod, but she has never been one to stay in one place for long. Her path has taken her through San Diego, Los Angeles, Louisville, and most recently Denver, where she has put down roots. Along the way she built a career that touched retail management, visual merchandising, academic administration, and event planning. Before enrolling at Heritage School of Interior Design, she ran her own event floral design business, work that already had her thinking in terms of color, composition, and space.

A New Direction

Vanessa’s move to Denver in 2021 set the stage, quite literally, for what came next. She was asked to create a stage set design for a local church, and the experience changed everything. She fell in love with the creative process, with managing a project and a team, and with the satisfaction of carrying an idea from a first sketch to a finished space. A business owner happened to be in the audience that day, and the design resonated with him enough that he offered Vanessa the chance to redesign his local coffee shop. She said yes without hesitation, and with pencil and graph paper in hand, her interior design story officially began.

It did not take long for Vanessa to realize that passion and instinct could only carry her so far in commercial design. She had the ideas, but she wanted the technical skills and the confidence to know her work was safe and code compliant. That realization sent her searching for a certification program, ideally one that moved quickly. Heritage Denver came up in her search, and she knew right away it was the right fit. Fundamentals of design, industry field trips, technical software training, commercial design coursework, and a professional portfolio component all lined up with exactly what she needed.

“I quickly hopped on the internet to search for certification programs, and even better if they were accelerated. Heritage School of Interior Design popped up and I was instantly smitten.” — Vanessa

Life at Heritage

Heritage gave Vanessa what her early, self-taught design work could not, a real technical foundation and the confidence to know she was designing safely and correctly. The program’s mix of fundamentals coursework, industry field trips, and hands-on technical software training turned her instincts into skills she could rely on. She has described the experience as one that took her from passion and pencil sketches to real professional readiness.

That growth has not been limited to the technical side. Her time at Heritage has also reignited a passion for art, particularly large scale painting, that she had long set aside. Between the coursework, the industry exposure, and the encouragement from instructors and classmates, Vanessa has found herself dreaming bigger than she expected, and looking toward corners of the design world she once thought were out of reach.

Outside the classroom, she draws inspiration from nearly everywhere. Nature’s color palettes speak to her, travel opens her eyes to new architecture and ideas, and a good afternoon in an art museum, whether she is looking at Roman sculpture or Bauhaus decorative arts, always sends her home with something new to think about.

Looking Ahead

Vanessa’s immediate goals are rooted in commercial design, with a focus on small, curated businesses like coffee shops, spas, and boutique retail spaces. But she is not stopping there. After graduation, she hopes to move into art gallery and museum design, the kind of storytelling through space that reveals a narrative to everyone who walks through it. It is an ambitious next chapter, and one she says she never would have had the confidence to pursue without the education and encouragement she found at Heritage Denver.

Design tools like AutoCAD and SketchUp have given her the technical foundation to bring these bigger ideas to life, while organizations like ASID and publications such as Architectural Digest continue to feed her curiosity about where commercial and gallery design can go next.

One Last Thing

Vanessa describes her time at Heritage as an unexpected, beautiful, and challenging journey, one she never imagined she would be on at this point in her life, but one she would not trade for anything. She is quick to credit her teachers and fellow classmates as a true source of inspiration and encouragement in her pursuit of good, ethical, safe, and beautiful design.

“HSID has been an unexpected, beautiful yet challenging journey that I never thought I would be on at this time in my life, but I wouldn’t trade it for the world.” — Vanessa
