With over a decade of experience running her own interior design business in Boulder, CO, Susan Hall came to Heritage School of Interior Design to deepen her technical skills and explore new opportunities in the field. In this interview, she shares her background, inspiration, and the journey that brought her to HSID.
1. Can you share a bit about your background and your career path prior to attending HSID?
“I’ve been running my own interior design business for over 12 years in Boulder, CO. It began organically after a short stint in upcycling furnishings and participating in outdoor markets. That’s actually where I met my first clients for interior design work.
Before that, I worked in fundraising for non-profits, including art museums. Being in a work environment surrounded by art filled me with joy, and it played a pivotal role in my decision to pursue a more creative career—one that allows me to apply both my visual strengths and interpersonal skills to my projects.”
2. Why did you decide to pursue interior design as your career?
“While studying photography and graphic design in Los Angeles, I discovered I had strong visual instincts. I’ve also always enjoyed serving people. Interior design aligns well with my personality—it gives me a space where I can use my strengths and continue growing professionally.”
“As my projects have become more complex, I’ve developed as both a leader and a team player. The best design work comes from collaboration, and being able to confidently work through challenges as part of a team is essential for success. I genuinely enjoy working with others and have fun with my clients and project partners—the salespeople, subcontractors, architects, and builders—who all play a part in achieving our goals. Interior design is engaging and has allowed me continuous personal and professional growth.”
3. What drew you to select Heritage School of Interior Design for your education?
“The technical classes offered at Heritage School of Interior Design in Denver, CO will strengthen my skills and make me more competitive in the job market. The pandemic enhanced our ability to work remotely, and with that came the need for stronger technical proficiency. Learning software programs like AutoCAD, SketchUp, and Revit will help me better illustrate my ideas to clients and collaborate more effectively with architects and builders. Heritage also provides the opportunity to dive into commercial design, which is an area I’m interested in exploring.”
4. Where do you draw your design inspiration?
“I find a lot of inspiration in public spaces—bars, restaurants, and hotels in the high-end or luxury market. Nature also plays a huge role in how I view color. Mother Nature is an expert colorist. I currently have two projects in Steamboat Springs, CO, and the drive through the Yampa Valley—especially in the summer—is a visual masterpiece. The colors in the trees, moss, and grasses are so striking, I often have to pull over to take photos.”
5. How has returning to school influenced your design career?
“I’m grateful to have found Heritage School of Interior Design in Denver. It’s helping me grow at my own pace as a designer. I’ve always loved being in school—especially in subjects that genuinely interest me—and HSID makes that growth both accessible and affordable.”
