“I Wanted a Career That Truly Excited Me” – Ashlee’s Journey from Esthetics to Interior Design

By Heritage | Success Stories, Utah | 0 comment | 6 November, 2025 | 0

Ashlee always knew she had a passion for design, but discovering that she wanted to pursue it as a career took time. Through exploration and self-discovery, she realized that interior design was the creative path she had been searching for.

Tell us about your background – Where are you from? What was your career path prior to HSID?

I was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, and raised in Northern Utah. I earned my Master Esthetician license in high school and worked in that field for a couple of years. While I appreciated the experience, I realized I wasn’t fully passionate about the work. I knew I wanted a career that would truly excite me, and interior design had always been something I loved and wanted to pursue.

Why did you decide to pursue interior design as your career?

Growing up, I loved exploring the furniture and decor sections in stores. I enjoyed frequently changing my room and helping my mom design our home. In high school, I took continuing education courses in interior design and was drawn to the creative process. After getting married and designing my own home, my passion reignited. I also discovered the many different avenues within interior design, which made it even more appealing as a career. Helping my mom redesign her new build ultimately solidified my decision to pursue interior design professionally.

What challenges did you have to overcome to get where you are today?

For a long time, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with my life. I wanted a career that was fulfilling and allowed me to use my creativity, rather than feeling mundane. People often say to find a career you’re passionate about, but I didn’t know what that was for me. I’m also a bit of a perfectionist, which made it difficult to take risks in pursuing something new. Finding a path that combined passion, creativity, and purpose was a challenge I had to work through.

Tell us a little about your experience at HSID and how it prepared you for a design career

Most interior designers have an innate eye for design, but HSID taught me the technical and practical skills that really make a designer confident in their craft. I gained a deeper understanding of details I hadn’t realized were part of the industry. The instructors, all experienced designers themselves, were honest, supportive, and committed to preparing us for real-world design work. HSID gave me the tools to not just dream about design but to build a professional career around it.

What is your current or upcoming design-related job?

I’m currently working as a design assistant for a design firm and furniture store. I help other designers with projects and assist clients with furniture and decor selections. I also enjoy helping friends and family with design questions or guiding them in creating their spaces.

What is the best advice you’ve ever received?

The best advice I’ve received is to get clear on what matters most to you, and then take consistent, imperfect action toward it, regardless of fear or judgment. Don’t let fear dictate your decisions.

What are your future career goals as an interior designer?

My long-term dream is to work on new-build custom residential projects, where there’s the most creative freedom with home architecture. In the near future, I’d like to gain more experience as a Junior Designer at a design firm, building my skills and portfolio along the way.
