For Sanja le Roux, design has always been about more than creating beautiful spaces. It’s about weaving together function, purpose, and creativity in a way that transforms everyday life. Born and raised in rural South Africa, Sanja’s path to interior design has been anything but ordinary. After a successful career in engineering and a move across the world, she’s now pursuing her dream at Heritage School of Interior Design in Denver.

Can you share a little about your background and what led you here?

I was born and raised in rural South Africa and started my career as an industrial engineer. After immigrating to the U.S. in 2017, I left the corporate environment and changed gears, deciding to stay home to focus on my young family while training to become a Pilates instructor and teaching Pilates part-time.

What inspired you to pursue a career in interior design?

I have always believed in combining form and function, beauty and purpose. I love solving problems, understanding constraints, and doing things right the first time. I also noticed how big an influence my surroundings can have on my mood and overall sense of well-being.

My engineering career utilized my organizational and problem-solving skills, but I still craved creativity. In interior design I have found the perfect blend of these principles: creativity, function, and purposeful problem-solving. It gives me the opportunity to combine my technical and creative talents to craft meaningful environments.

Why did you choose Heritage School of Interior Design?

I chose Heritage School of Interior Design in Denver because it’s an accelerated, hands-on program with small class sizes and a strong sense of community. I also value the school’s incredible network of designers, suppliers, and manufacturers, which opens so many doors in the industry. For me, it was the perfect combination of efficiency, practicality, and real-world connection.

What are your career goals as you look ahead?

I’m keeping an open mind as I explore the different career paths within design. I’d love to start out with a small boutique firm, preferably both residential and commercial, to learn from seasoned professionals and discover where my strengths and passions truly lie. Eventually, I’d love to have my own intimate, highly focused design studio where I take on projects that spark joy and allow me to pour myself into every detail.

Where do you find your design inspiration?

I find inspiration anywhere and everywhere, from the people I meet—their stories, triumphs, and struggles—to the beautiful natural world all around us, with its textures and colors that seem to be new every day. My South African roots give me a love for boldness, warmth, raw organic materials, and patterns that carry meaning.

And because I can’t stand waste, I love thrifting and giving new life to old treasures, creating beauty out of what others might overlook. For me, design is about finding the extraordinary in the everyday.
