Furniture Design & Fabrication | Portland

COURSE OVERVIEW

In this intensive 8-week course, students will build a chair, bench, stool, folding chair, or another piece of furniture that can be used for seating. Students will have the flexibility to be creative and experimental during the design phase. Students should expect to gain an understanding of the design and building process and will learn to use “prototype” language. Three skilled maker facilitators will be present and can accommodate up to 6 students total. This course includes two months of unlimited studio time at ADX.

Prerequisite: AutoCAD

We foster a non-competitive collaborative environment where everyone’s thoughts, creativity and designs are valued.

Week 1 – Shop Orientation

  • Introduction of basic shop tools

Week 2 – Design Phase

  • 1-on-1 meetings to discuss design ideas
  • Identify necessary tools and materials
  • Group collaboration

Week 3 – Begin Building

  • Group discussion
  • Work hours

Week 4 – Week 7 – Work Days

Week 8 – Finishing Touches & Critique 

*Please note that it is highly recommended for you to come in during scheduled studio time to work on your project outside of class.
