10 Week Commercial Design Program | Portland

COURSE OVERVIEW

This dynamic ten-week course examines the unique and diverse disciplines within the progressive field of Commercial Interior Design. Learn the fundamentals and elements essential to produce and manage a successful commercial project from initial client meeting to completion. Explore innovative hands-on methods, processes and skills to design engaging interior environments that enrich spaces functionally and aesthetically.  Immerse yourself in the conceptual exploration of spaces that support programmatic and functional requirements.  Identify, research and creatively analyze elements related to performance, specifications, functionality and quality of space.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

At the completion of this course, students will develop a working knowledge of architectural interior spaces through analysis of form, function and context, and exhibit proficient skills in research, problem-solving, critical-thinking, communication, team-building and project management.  Through design discipline and design practice, students will cultivate the skills and confidence to successfully engage with design professionals and deliver thoughtful and functional spaces.

Successful completion of this course is based on competently meeting the following general learning objectives, evidenced by passing exam scores and incorporation into weekly assignments, term project performance throughout the term and final project presentation.

  • Verbalize knowledge of commercial interior design methods, processes and broad understanding of its discipline.
  • Demonstrate understanding and apply design principles and elements to commercial design.
  • Demonstrate understanding of products, furniture & materials by making appropriate selections for commercial interiors.
  • Demonstrate understanding of the design process by implementing it throughout the term and in final term project presentation.
  • Demonstrate professionalism and collaboration with classmates and project stakeholders to provide desired outcome during final design project.
  • Demonstrate strong presentation and engagement skills throughout the term, including assignments, field trips, class participation and term project.
